Many of you have been to chiropractors who do not utilize traction in the office. Some of you have never been to a chiropractor and may be wondering why traction is a necessary and important part of your care. The fact is that traction is the only known conservative method used to restore normal curves to the spine. Traction is simply a sustained force applied to the spine in a specific direction, for the purpose of restoring normal spinal position. These traction forces are necessary to reduce abnormal spinal curvatures, correct abnormal postures, and will provide increased stability to damaged spines. These forces should only be applied by a practitioner of CBP® or Clinical Biomechanics of Posture®. The proper application of spinal traction will ensure safety and effectiveness of care.
Force and Time
Your spine exhibits many different properties. Elasticity, viscosity, and plasticity are the properties which are being addressed with traction. Elasticity simply means that you spine is kind-of like a rubber band. If you apply a rapid stretch to a rubber band, it instantly changes it shape, lengthens, and then returns to normal when the stretch is remove. The human spine is no different, if you apply a traction force, and then remove it quickly, the spine still resume its shape; even if that shape is abnormal! The spine also exhibits the property of viscosity, or, in other words, you spine is kind-of like silly puddy™. If you press on silly-puddy™ it will retain the shape of your finger. However, this shape is not permanent and can be changed with pressure in another direction. You spine is no different, if a force is applied for a certain amount of time, a change will take place. However, if that force is removed too soon, the spine will again resume an abnormal shape. The ultimate goal of traction is to apply a force which will affect the plastic property of the spine. This means permanent change toward normal! If a traction force is applied to the spine for more than 10-15 minutes, a permanent change is made. That change may be small at first but, over time, the change will be more and more apparent, improving posture, structure, and function!
What should I expect while undergoing traction?
What to expect while undergoing traction
The CBP® doctors are trained to determine the proper time for traction therapy to begin. Once it has been determined that traction may begin without any increase in symptoms, there are some things you should be aware of. First, be patient! It has probably taken many years for you to develop yoru abnormal spinal positions and it will take some time to get you back toward normal. Traction forces will be applied to your neck, or your back, or both to achieve optimal spinal correction. Understand that you will be slowly introduced to this type of care and it is important to keep an open line of communication with your CBP® Doctor. If at anytime, you experience an increase in symptoms, it is important that you notify your doctor to see if there needs to be modifications in force application or time duration of traction.
Am I going to experience pain?
NO! If at any time you experience an increase in pain during traction, it is vital to notify your CBP® Doctor to see if modifications are necessary. There are over 50 different forms of spinal traction and so it important to have an open line of communication with your doctor. However, because traction is changing the spine from an abnormal position back toward a normal position, you may experience some increased soreness. This soreness is normal, and frankly, is expected. If you did not experience increased soreness from the traction, it is likely that you are not changing your spine toward normal. Remember, just like exercising or learning to play an instrument, you will receive the greatest benefit if you are consistent, diligent, and challenge yourself toward a goal of normal spinal structure. The harder you work, the greater the spinal change and thus the greater the benefit to you and your health.
How long will this take?
It is necessary to remember that healing takes time. In order to achieve a great outcome, nor only is hard work necessary, you consistence isvital. Look at it like this: if you were to exercise only one day per week, do you really think that you would be in great shape by years end? Probably not. However, if you exercise for 52 days in a row (the same number!), you will definitely see results! Traction is the same way, you must be willing to consistently traction, with a concerted effort to increase time and force in order to see the kind of corrections you and your CBP® Doctor wish to accomplish.
What will help my progress?
Now that you understand why traction is necessary to correct spinal structure toward normal, there are things you can do outside this office that will significantly benefit you while you’re here. Most importantly; follow your doctors’ instructions. This means that if you have been instructed to increase water consumption, decrease smoking, or improve your diet and nutrition, be diligent about following through. Remember that the CBP® Doctors have your best interests in mind. Work with us to assure maximum results!

This normal position is important in reducing abnormal symptoms, such as pain, as well as improving overall function and prevention of spine problems later in life. Through a customized treatment plan and lifestyle changes, you can have the freedom from pain you deserve. Feel like you’ve just won the lottery? Well, in a way, you have! The doctors’ consider partnership with you, the patient, of utmost importance. Posture is the Window to the Spine
Catchy, but true. Posture is one of the most simple, but difficult aspects of our everyday lifestyles. Whether it is at work or play, keeping good posture is of utmost importance. Being conscious of position when sitting, standing, walking, or lying down can make all the difference in the success of your treatment plan. The Spinal Care Workshop delivered by our Doctors is a wealth of information providing the key to posture success.
What is Normal?
Normal values exist in all bodily functions. Normal blood pressure, normal temperature, normal blood sugar, and normal hormone levels are just a few examples of a body’s normal values. Just as there are normal values in all bodily functions, there are normal curvatures of the spine. When looking at the spine in the frontal view, the spine should be straight. The ear should be directly over the shoulder, the shoulder directly over the hip, and the hip directly over the ankle. If these normal structures and postures are not seen, stress and strain are placed upon the spine. These stresses and strains lead to breakdown in the tissues causing dysfunction and eventually pain. The restoration of normal structure as facilitated by you CBP Chiropractor will lead to normalized function in the body.
Why X-rays Are Important
X-rays determine where the spine is in relation to the normal spinal models. Without an x-ray, need that demands correcting cannot be determined. X-rays must be taken to resolve the cause of your complaints. Concerning x-rays, it is important to understand the differences between normal and abnormal. The proper course of treatment is drafted once your x-rays have been reviewed by your CBP Chiropractor.
Education is Key
Education is a main key to CBP success. It’s not just about the knowledge of the CBP Practitioners although that is at the top of the list. It’s about the partnership between the doctors’ professional integrity, and the daily perseverance of the patient. These two key points pasted together with positive attitude can create lasting changes towards a healthier and happier life. Spinal health is a way of life, and a freedom pointing towards a healthier way of living.
CBP and Kids
Children are our most valued asset in the world. Their health is often more important to us than our own. Protecting them from dangers in the unpredictable world is top priority. Understand that we at CBP feel the exact same way. However, we are on the lookout to safeguard one of the most vital, necessary parts of a child’s body-the nervous system! How do we do that? By delicately taking care of the protective structure of the nervous system-the spine.
Did you know that the first part that forms is an embryo in the nervous system? From this nervous system, direction is given for the proper formation of vital organs, muscles, and skeleton. Without the proper signal from the growing nervous system, nothing would form properly, and normal growth would not occur. CBP chiropractors are specially trained to detect spinal abnormalities even in the youngest spines. We can see abnormal posture, feel muscle spasms, and if needed, verify spinal abnormalities with x-rays. These spinal abnormalities can then be corrected, allowing your child to develop correctly thus preventing future problems. CBP offers kids the treatment and knowledge to make this prevention last.
The zipper-down back
When a dentist finds cavities in your children’s teeth how does he/she know? Mostly by looking and probing with the instruments right? Or they may take x-rays to verify that there are no cavities hiding. But what about their spine? Unfortunately we don’t have a zipper that opens down the back to allow us to see when the spine is damaged or growing improperly. Fortunately, the CBP® doctors in this office are specially trained to detect spinal abnormalities even in the youngest spines. Our doctors can see abnormal posture, feel muscle spasm, and if needed, verify the presence of spinal abnormalities with x-rays. But what’s even better is, unlike other forms of Chiropractic, CBP® doctors like the ones in this office are trained to correct these spinal abnormalities before they become permanent. Permanent spinal abnormalities lead to pain and dysfunction later in life.
The Stress Factor
Stress if very common in our society. From upset stomachs to back pain and muscle stiffness, the function to the nervous system is crucial. The CBP chiropractic approach to stress is to help normalize the function of your nervous system by finding the "weak links" in your spine, which is the major communication pathway of your nervous system. This can help restore better function making a profound difference in your response to stress.
